PRESS RELEASE
CONDEMNATION

Mr. Abid Saqi, Vice-Chairman, Pakistan Bar Council, has strongly condemned the arrest of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, Owner of Jang Group, in 34 years old case relating to 54 Kanal Land allegedly illegally acquired by him at Lahore, which is against all legal and ethical norms. The NAB which is often accused of resorting to pressure tactics by falsely implicating mostly those, in the political and media arena, who criticize the Government policies, has set another example of victimization. The arrest of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, at the hands of NAB authorities without any solid proof and requisite inquiry, as per the law, is an ample proof of victimization of political and media personnels, for their criticism against Government policies, which in fact they do in exercise of their right of expressions as guaranteed under the Constitution. In fact, the pre-trial arrest of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman is the worst type of punishment which could be expected only from the Government not believing in democratic process, fair play and the right of free trial.

It is most unfortunate that the Government is becoming intolerant against criticism, which amounts to undermine the right of expression and the free media. The Vice-Chairman, Pakistan Bar Council, has, therefore, demanded for immediate release of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, as he is innocent unless proven guilty.
